Al-Midan Food Street

Al-Midan is one of Damascus’s oldest and most characterful neighbourhoods, located immediately south of the Old City walls. Its main street – variously known as Midan Street or Al-Midan Food Street – is the city’s premier destination for traditional Damascene street food and sweets, a reputation it has held for generations.

The street is lined with food stalls, bakeries, and restaurants, many of which have been family-run for decades or even centuries. Specialities include sfiha (open-faced meat pies baked on saj griddles), fatteh (chickpeas and yoghurt with crispy bread), shawarma, falafel, and fresh juices. The area is particularly famous for its sweets: baklava, barazek (sesame cookies), and ma’moul (date-filled cookies) are produced in large quantities and sold fresh throughout the day.

Al-Midan comes alive in the evening, especially during Ramadan and on summer nights, when families stroll the street, children buy ice cream, and the aroma of grilling meat and baking bread fills the air. The neighbourhood has a distinctly working-class, authentic character compared to the more tourist-oriented Old City. Its food culture is considered an essential part of Damascene identity, and many dishes associated with Damascus originated here or reached their perfected form in Midan kitchens.
