Khan As’ad Pasha

Khan As’ad Pasha is the largest and most architecturally impressive caravanserai in Damascus, located in the Al-Bzouriyya souq in the Old City. It was built in 1752 by As’ad Pasha al-Azm, the Ottoman governor of Damascus who also commissioned the nearby Azem Palace. The khan served as a commercial depot and lodging for travelling merchants, storing goods from the caravan trade that connected Damascus to the wider Ottoman and Arab worlds.

The building is organised around a vast central courtyard measuring approximately 2,500 square metres. The courtyard is dominated by a monumental domed fountain at its centre, surrounded by eight smaller domes supported by massive pillars. The ground floor contained storage vaults and stables, while the upper floor provided sleeping quarters for merchants. The masonry is fine ablaq work – alternating courses of black basalt and white limestone – with carved decorative elements around the entrances and windows.

The khan’s scale and grandeur reflect the importance of Damascus as a commercial hub in the 18th century. It could accommodate hundreds of merchants and their animals, with facilities for cooking, bathing, and prayer. Today, Khan As’ad Pasha is no longer used for commerce but stands as a monument to Damascus’s mercantile heritage. Its vaulted halls and central dome are open to visitors and occasionally host cultural events and exhibitions.
