City District
Jobar
Jobar is a municipality in eastern Damascus with a population of approximately 83,245. Historically significant, it was home to the ancient Jobar Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in the world, associated with the biblical prophet Elijah.
The district has a long history of Jewish and Christian presence alongside Muslim communities. Jobar suffered heavy damage during the civil war but remains an important part of Damascus’s historical and cultural mosaic.
