Umayyad Square

QanawatCultural Venue

Umayyad Square (Sahat al-Umawiyyin) is the largest and most prominent public square in central Damascus, situated at the intersection of several major thoroughfares including Shukri al-Quwatli Street and Thawra Street. It serves as the city’s primary traffic hub and a landmark for navigation.

The square is surrounded by significant institutional and cultural buildings. On its western side stands the Damascus Opera House, the city’s main performing arts venue. The Syrian Television and Radio headquarters is also nearby. Several major hotels, including the Four Seasons, are within walking distance. The central roundabout features a large fountain and landscaped gardens.

Umayyad Square is both a practical transport nexus and a symbolic civic space. It has been the site of public gatherings, celebrations, and protests throughout modern Syrian history. The square connects the modern commercial districts of New Damascus with the historic Old City to the south, making it a natural transition point between old and new.
