Mount Qasioun Viewpoint

Mount Qasioun (Jabal Qasioun) rises to approximately 1,151 metres above sea level, forming the dramatic backdrop to Damascus on its northern side. The mountain has been a silent witness to the city’s entire history – from Aramaean kings to Roman governors, Umayyad caliphs, and modern urban life. Its slopes are mentioned in numerous historical and religious texts.

The upper slopes of Qasioun offer the most spectacular panoramic views over Damascus and the fertile Ghouta oasis. At sunset, the entire city glows gold and pink, and the lights of the Old City begin to twinkle. The viewpoint area, accessible by car via a winding road, is lined with restaurants and cafés – some built into natural caves in the mountainside. These establishments serve traditional Damascene food and arak while guests enjoy the view.

Several historical and religious sites are associated with the mountain. A cave near the summit is traditionally identified as the place where Cain killed Abel – the first murder in human tradition. There are also shrines and prayer spots visited by both Muslims and Christians. The mountain has been a popular picnic destination for Damascene families for generations.
