Damascus Opera House

QanawatCultural Venue

The Damascus Opera House (Dar al-Opera) is the city’s premier performing arts venue, located on Umayyad Square in the modern centre of Damascus. Inaugurated in 2004, it was the first dedicated opera house in Syria and represents a significant investment in the country’s cultural infrastructure.

The building’s architecture is modern but incorporates Islamic design elements – geometric patterns, arches, and calligraphic inscriptions – that connect it to Damascus’s architectural heritage. The main auditorium seats approximately 1,300 people and features excellent acoustics, with a stage large enough to accommodate full-scale opera, ballet, and symphonic productions. A smaller hall is used for chamber music, recitals, and lectures.

The Opera House is home to the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra and hosts a regular programme of concerts, theatre productions, and cultural events throughout the year. It has welcomed performers from across the Arab world and beyond, serving as a bridge between Syrian artistic traditions and international culture. The venue also houses rehearsal rooms, workshops for set and costume design, and a library of musical scores – making it a complete cultural complex rather than merely a performance space.
