Bab Touma Quarter

Bab Touma is one of the most historic and atmospheric quarters of the Old City of Damascus, centred on the gate of the same name at the northwest corner of the city walls. The quarter has been predominantly Christian for centuries and remains home to several of Damascus’s most important churches, including the Mariamite Cathedral (seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch) and the Chapel of Saint Ananias.

The quarter’s narrow, winding lanes are lined with traditional Damascene courtyard houses, many of which have been converted into boutique hotels, restaurants, and cafés. The architecture features intricately inlaid doors, wrought-iron balconies, and occasional glimpses of lush inner courtyards through open gateways. The streets are alive with the sounds of church bells, conversation, and the clatter of coffee cups.

Bab Touma is also a commercial hub, with shops selling religious articles, handmade crafts, olive oil soap, and spices. The quarter comes alive particularly in the evening, when families and visitors stroll the lanes and fill the restaurants. Its blend of religious heritage, residential charm, and hospitality makes it one of the most visited and beloved parts of the Old City.
