Yarmouk
Yarmouk is a densely populated municipality in southern Damascus with a population of approximately 137,248. Established in 1957 as a camp for Palestinian refugees, it grew into a major urban district and became a centre of Palestinian cultural and intellectual life in Syria.
Yarmouk was known for its bustling markets, schools, and vibrant community before suffering extensive destruction during the civil war. The district is gradually being rebuilt. It remains an important symbol of the Palestinian diaspora and the complex history of modern Damascus.
