Sayyida Zaynab Mosque

Religious Site

The Sayyida Zaynab Mosque is one of the most important Shi’a pilgrimage sites in the Islamic world, dedicated to Zaynab bint Ali, the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima and cousin Ali. Located in the southern suburbs of Damascus, the shrine has drawn pilgrims from Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, and beyond for centuries.

The original shrine was a modest structure, but it has been expanded and embellished repeatedly over the centuries. The current complex features a large golden dome, towering minarets, and a vast courtyard capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers. The interior is decorated with intricate mirror-work, silver zarih (lattice screen) around the tomb, and Persian calligraphy.

The mosque and its surrounding neighbourhood become especially crowded during religious observances, particularly the commemoration of Ashura and Arba’een, when pilgrims gather to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Husayn at Karbala – an event in which Zaynab played a central role as the voice of the survivors. The area around the shrine is filled with shops selling religious souvenirs, sweets, and traditional food.
